A train in the mountains

Last year, I went on the most fantastic holiday. I went to South America for six weeks! That's a long time to be away from home. I went with my sister, but our parents didn't come with us. It was the first time we were on holiday alone.

We visited three countries: Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. In Colombia, we visited the capital city, Bogota. I didn't like the city, but my sister loved it. Then in Ecuador, we went to the rainforest and to a market town called Otavalo. I bought some souvenirs there and we ate a delicious meal. In the rainforest, it rained every day. Now I understand why it's called the rainforest.

When we left Ecuador, we travelled to Peru. We visited some famous places and stayed in the mountains for three days. We saw the famous Condor - it's a really big bird. Then we went on my favourite part of the journey. We travelled on the train from Lima, the capital city of Peru, up into the Andes mountains to a town called Huancayo.

The train journey was amazing. We travelled next to the Rimac River and we went on 58 bridges. There were a lot of small towns and the views from the train were beautiful. As the train travelled up into the mountains, the weather was good - it didn't rain, but it was cold. My sister was happy - she loves taking photos. The people that work on the trains speak English, Spanish, and French, so we didn't have problems.

After 12 hours, we arrived in Huancayo, where the train journey finished. We were both very tired, but it was a journey to remember.
